Description of the route

Since its very birth Arkhangelsk has been a wooden city. However, wood is not a long-lasting material, and people’s tastes and needs have changed with time and wooden houses which had caught the fancy of tourists have been replaced by comfortable but typical multi-storey buildings. In the beginning of 1980-s in order to preserve authenticity of the northern city, a kind of an open air museum representing the wooden construction of Arkhangelsk was created. Today when you walk along the Chumbarov-Luchinsky prospect in the city centre you go back a century in time. The buildings that now stand on Chumbarovka (that is how the native lovingly call it) used to be situated in different parts of the city and it’s even more interesting to see wooden houses on their historical, “legal” place. Not many of them remain –the Kunitsyna Manor, the Ovchinnikov house, the residences of Surkov and Sharvin -- once part of the former Nemetskaya sloboda. The Kemsky settlement in Solombala still retains not only wooden construction, but also the layout and authenticity of a marine settlement of the 19th century. You can feel the authenticity of early 19th century Archangelsk by studying the “Old Arkhangelsk” model made by Z.P. Kalashnikov in 1980-s and on display at the Regional Centre of Additional Education.
