Tourism in Arkhangelsk
This is the oldest building in Arkhangelsk, one of the few remaining -- even if fragmented-- remnants of Russian architecture from the second half of the 17th century. Its special feature is that it brings together in one ensemble two merchant yards -- Russian and German, and a menacing fortress. At each corner three-story round towers extend upward. The Gallery – an essential component of merchant yards – was on the interior so that the building could be turned to an unassailable fortress in case of an attack. Today, the Merchant Yard building are an architectural monument of federal significance.
It is still under restoration, but the “Merchant Yard” museum-exhibition complex at the Arkhangelsk Regional Museum has already found a home inside the building. There is a permanent exposition "16th-17th Century History and Culture of Pomorye" located in the renovated one-column chambers of Russian Merchant Yard and various exhibitions are held there.
